Chapter Twelve
It was dark outside when, with flashlight in hand, Ellen tiptoed down the stairs of her family farmhouse and slipped out the front door.
The night was warm but not overly so. The stars shone in a midnight sky and the moon was a white crescent hovering above her. She wondered if Isaac would come or if he would change his mind at the last minute. She stepped off the front porch into the stillness of the night and worried that she’d have to return without spending any time in Isaac’s company. She worried that she was foolish for spending time with him.
“Isaac?” She walked into the center of the yard.
“Ellen.” He stepped out from behind a large bush and into the glow from her flashlight. He looked handsome, and her heart leaped. He’d kept his word, she thought, overcome with joy.
He moved forward as she approached. “You’re here,” she said.
“Ja. And why wouldn’t I be?” His gray eyes sparkled in the night.
“I...” she began. “Are you ready to go?”
“I’ve been thinking,” Isaac said. A whinny drew her attention to where he’d parked his buggy near the barn. “Why don’t we just stay and walk? The swings are too far and we’d have to come back sooner, but here—” she saw his flash of teeth in the darkness “—we can take our time.”
She nodded, relieved. “I don’t mind staying.”
He bobbed his head. “Gut. Let’s go.” He started toward her father’s fields. “I finished your pie.”
She gasped out her delight. “All of it?” But she knew the answer before he spoke.
“What do you think?”
“I think you liked my pie.”
“Ja, I did.”
They strolled along the width of the barn through an opening in the fence and kept going. All the animals were in for the night, so there wasn’t any danger that they’d escape if they forgot to shut and lock the gate. Isaac closed and latched it, however, before they continued along the edge of the pasture and slipped out a second gate to the outside perimeter.
Walking beside Isaac in the darkness felt awkward to Ellen but wonderful at the same time. It had been a long while since they’d spent any amount of time together, and even longer since they’d been alone. Isaac didn’t say a word, and Ellen wondered if he was feeling strange, too.
They made their way along the outside of the fence to the wooden bench that Ellen’s father had built for his parents when they’d been alive.
Her grandfather liked to observe the animals in the pasture, and later, when he got too old to farm, he enjoyed watching the workers in the fields. Ellen as a young child had seen the sadness in his eyes and had thought he might have wanted to join Dat in the fields. But he’d been able to look, at least, if he wanted and he’d seemed to take comfort in that.
Ellen sat on the bench and Isaac settled down next to her.
“Do you remember when we came here to watch the lunar eclipse?” he asked.
